嬌鶲屬由卡爾·林奈描述於1764年。[1]這個名字來自古希臘語，亞里斯多德曾使用這個名字來描述一種小鳥，但具體是今天的哪一個物種尚不明確。[2]英國動物學家喬治·羅伯特·格雷於1840年將緋紅冠嬌鶲確立為其模式物種。[3][4]
