1946年，馬林出生在美國加利福尼亞州洛杉磯，母親叫埃爾莎，父親叫奧斯卡·馬林，在洛杉磯警察局工作。[1][2][3]馬林出生之後是兔唇，後修復。[4]馬林會講西班牙語。馬林的暱稱「切奇」，來源於墨西哥一道小吃炸豬肉皮。
馬林曾在加州的聖費爾南多谷讀高中，大學在加州州立大學北嶺分校度過。[5]1967年，馬林搬遷到加拿大不列顛哥倫比亞的溫哥華，以躲避越南戰爭。[6]在溫哥華，馬林結識了自己未來的喜劇搭檔湯米·莊。

1975年，馬林和達琳·莫理結婚，他們有一個孩子，1984年兩人離婚。[7]
1986年，馬林和帕蒂結婚，他們有2個孩子。[8]
