建立與命名 編輯
該屬的正式命名由法國博物學家喬治·居維葉於1800年所建立。[1][2]其屬名Psittacula來自拉丁語中的psittacus，意即為「鸚鵡」。源自於白腹小海鸚的種小名psittacula。[3]而其模式種為澳洲鳥類學家格雷戈里·馬修斯於1917年指定的緋胸鸚鵡。[4][5][6]
在歷史上，本屬有著相對複雜的分類史，1820年時德國動物學家海因里希·庫爾碰巧使用同樣的名字Psittacula命名了另一些鸚鵡。[7][8]1825年時，愛爾蘭動物學家尼古拉斯·艾爾沃德·維格同時建立了亞澳鸚鵡族及一個名為Palaeornis的屬以容納這些鳥類，參考的來源正是庫爾的資料。[9][8]並導致了兩個Psittacula有落差，其中庫爾的屬包含的是小型、短尾的鸚鵡，而居維葉的則是包含了大型長尾鸚鵡。[8]使後續的資料讓Psittacula一度包含的是「Love-birds」（即情侶鸚鵡），而非現在的長尾鸚鵡。[10]這個情況直到1937年才被建議修正，並直到1961年後作為族名的Psittaculini才完全變成最優先的名稱，而國際動物命名法委員會也於2014年肯定了居維葉的命名才具有優先權。[5][9][6]
Palaeornis至此成為了本屬的同物異名，並直至2019年的研究發現本屬分類上的可能問題後，被復活並用以容納亞歷山大鸚鵡等物種。[11]

舊世界鸚鵡屬位於亞澳鸚鵡亞科之下，但在2016年起的一些研究中發現該屬與巨喙鸚鵡屬及藍腰鸚鵡屬可能呈現多系群的關係。[1][12]

由於被證明可能為多系群的關係，2019年起有研究員提議將其重新劃分為十個單系的新屬，並已被IUCN及國際鳥盟所使用。這些新屬分別為：[11]
