庫柏山滾起司大賽

庫柏山滾起司大賽是每年春季銀行假日(五月最後一個禮拜一)，於英國格洛斯特布拉沃斯村（英语：Brockworth）舉辦的趣味競賽，參賽者須從陡峭的庫柏山衝下以競逐一塊飛快滾動的雙層格洛斯特起司。[1] 該賽事原為布拉沃斯村的傳統節慶，如今享譽國際，參賽者來自世界各地。《衛報》稱其為「國際知名活動」。[2]

賽事名稱來自附近薛丁頓村的酒吧「起司翻滾者」，距離比賽地點約5公里。賽程從山頂到山腳全程200碼(約180米)。裁判將一塊重3 - 4公斤的雙層格洛斯特起司由山頂滾下，參賽者隨之起跑，途中撿起起司或最先到達終點者獲勝，冠軍可獲得該起司。

雖然目標為「抓住起司」，但由於起司的滾動速度高達時速110公里，參賽者不太可能在途中撿起起司，而是連滾帶爬的從山丘上摔落。終點設置路障，並有醫護人員待命。賽事於白天進行，男女分開競賽。[3]

有關滾起司大賽最早的書面紀錄出自1826年一封寫給格洛斯特郡情報員的書信。據信該賽事至少有600年的歷史，起初於聖靈降臨節 （页面存档备份，存于互联网档案馆）舉辦，後改為春季銀行假日。[4][5]

賽事起源有兩種說法，一是為爭取公地放牧權[4][6] ，二是來自異教風俗: 將點燃的灌木堆從山丘滾下，象徵冬去春來；或祭司從山頂拋灑糖果祈求生育與豐收。[7]

1982年，一組來自布里斯托大學的學生團體用膠捲相機記錄當年於5月31日舉辦的滾起司大賽，是該賽事最早的影像紀錄。

2009年，該賽事因安全疑慮被取消，但隨即於2011年重啟；2020、2021年因新冠疫情停辦。[8]

百年來，滾起司大賽始終未獲官方承認與管理，全由地方人士自主發起。2011年賽事冠軍海倫·索普(Helen Thorpe)聲稱:

「沒有人能阻止我們。他們說這不是官方活動，但我們都是布拉沃斯人，我們仍經營酪農業。對我們而言，這就是官方活動。」[9]

比賽使用的雙層格洛斯特起司是一種圓形硬奶酪。側面由木製外殼保護，並有緞帶裝飾。

自 1988 年起，起司由當地起司製造商黛安娜·斯馬特(Diana Smart)及其子羅德(Rod Smart)提供。[3][10][11] 2013 年 5 月，格洛斯特郡警局警告 86 歲的斯瑪特，稱她要為比賽造成的傷患負責。[3]

近年來，主辦方出於安全考量，改用泡棉複製品取代真起司。2013年的一場賽事中，來自澳洲的選手卡勒·斯托德( Caleb Stalder )儘管非第一個到達終點者，卻出乎意料地在途中抓住假起司而獲勝。[12]

由於庫柏山陡峭顛簸、加上參賽者眾多，每年大賽都會發生選手摔傷或互相踐踏的意外。雖未有死亡紀錄，該賽事造成的人員損傷仍受到英國各大媒體的關注。

位於庫柏山腳下的聖約翰救護機構（格洛斯特、切爾滕納姆和斯特勞德分部）為賽事提供急救服務與救護車待命。當地橄欖球俱樂部的成員與年輕農民也會在終點攔阻暴衝的選手，與快速撤離途中停止的受傷人員。[13]
