摘要 編輯

Pictured is the aftermath of a snowstorm in the Sonoran Desert. Extreme weather events may become common as a consequence of climate change, challenging organisms' abilities to adapt. Carlos A. Botero et al. modeled various evolutionary adaptation strategies that organisms may employ to protect themselves from thermal stress. The results suggest that although populations can often cope with large changes in environmental conditions, occasionally climate conditions may exceed organisms' ability to adapt and reach an evolutionary tipping point, beyond which the population may collapse. According to the authors, the results also suggest a theoretical framework to explore how variability in environmental conditions may affect the viability of natural populations.
