巨猿
巨猿（学名：Gigantopithecus）是已滅絕的一屬猿，生存於約100-30萬年前的中國、印度及越南[1]，與幾種人科在時間框及地理位置上相同。[2]化石紀錄指步氏巨猿是最巨大的猿，站立時高3米及重545公斤。[1][3][4]

化石遺骸 编辑
首個由人類學家孔尼華（Ralph von Koenigswald）描述的巨猿化石是於1935年在香港的一家中藥店發現的，包括了一些化石化的牙齒及骨頭，預備磨碎作為中藥。[5]孔尼華將這個牠命名巨猿。[6]
很少巨猿的化石被發現。除了在那中藥店發現的臼齒外，在中國柳州亦有發現步氏巨猿的牙齒及幾塊顎骨。[3]其他發現的地方包括越南及印度。[2][4]從化石的發現地可見巨猿是分佈在亞洲東南部。
中國體質人類學家及古靈長類學家董悌忱認為由於巨猿自身俱有一系列鮮明的差異性,例如巨猿下頜聯合正中矢狀斷面及第三下頜與其他猿類及人類下頜齒槽弓輪廓的區別。巨猿代表了靈長類譜系樹上一個完全獨立的分支。因此，他以這種理由認為Gigantopithecinae是一個以Gigantopithecus為其分類屬的新亞科，在邏輯上屬於Pongidae，而不是Hominidae。 [7].
